When most people want to secure their mobile internet connection or access localized content on their phones, they immediately download a VPN app. The problem with VPNs on mobile is that they run heavy background processes, eat up your battery, and encrypt all your traffic—which you might not want. If you only need to change your virtual location or route specific browser traffic, configuring a SOCKS5 proxy is a much cleaner solution.

Both Android and iOS have native support for proxies, meaning you can configure them without rooting or jailbreaking your device. In this guide, I will show you how to configure SOCKS5 proxies on both Android and iOS devices, step by step.

How to Setup SOCKS5 on Android (No Root Required)

Android's native Wi-Fi settings only support HTTP proxies out of the box. If you try to enter a SOCKS5 proxy in the default Wi-Fi settings, it won't connect. To use SOCKS5 on Android without rooting your phone, you need a simple helper application. I recommend using **Postern** or **College Proxy** from the Google Play Store—both are free and lightweight.

  1. First, copy a working SOCKS5 proxy address from the live list on the Connect Proxy Homepage. Try to pick one with green latency numbers (lower than 200ms) to ensure a fast connection. Let's assume the proxy is 192.168.1.100:1080.
  2. Download and open **Postern** on your Android device.
  3. Tap the side menu icon and select **Proxy Rules**.
  4. Tap **Add Proxy**. Give the profile a name, like Connect SOCKS5.
  5. Enter the IP address (e.g., 192.168.1.100) in the Server field, and the port (e.g., 1080) in the Port field.
  6. Choose **SOCKS5** as the Proxy Type.
  7. Leave the username and password fields blank, and click **Save**.
  8. Go to the **Rules** section in Postern. Add a rule to route "All Traffic" through the proxy profile you just created.
  9. Toggle the main switch on to start routing your traffic. Postern runs as a local VPN service to forward your packets through the SOCKS5 proxy without root.

How to Setup SOCKS5 on iOS (iPhone & iPad)

Unlike Android, iOS natively supports SOCKS5 configurations directly inside its Wi-Fi settings. This means you do not need to download any third-party applications to set it up.

  1. Copy a SOCKS5 proxy IP and Port from the Connect Proxy Homepage.
  2. Open the **Settings** app on your iPhone and tap **Wi-Fi**.
  3. Find the Wi-Fi network you are currently connected to and tap the blue **"i" (Information)** icon next to it.
  4. Scroll down to the bottom of the page and tap **Configure Proxy**.
  5. Change the setting from "Off" or "Automatic" to **Manual**.
  6. Enter your copied proxy IP address in the **Server** field.
  7. Enter the port number in the **Port** field.
  8. Leave **Authentication** turned off (Connect Proxy public lists do not use passwords).
  9. Tap **Save** in the top-right corner. Safari and your other browser apps will now route all traffic through the SOCKS5 proxy.

Testing and Turning Off the Connection

After finishing the setup, open your mobile browser and go to an IP lookup page like httpbin.org/ip. It should show the proxy IP instead of your mobile carrier's IP address. This confirms the configuration is working.

When you want to browse normally again, just toggle the Postern app off on Android, or go back to your iOS Wi-Fi settings and set "Configure Proxy" back to "Off".

Important Mobile Proxy Considerations

While using proxies on mobile is convenient, you should keep a few limitations in mind:

  • Wi-Fi Network Limit: The native proxy configuration on iOS only applies to the specific Wi-Fi network you configured it on. If you disconnect from that network or switch to cellular data (LTE/5G), your traffic will go through your normal connection. If you need proxy coverage on mobile data, you will need to use a client app from the App Store like Shadowrocket or Potatso.
